FTIR spectroscopy & microscopy
We have at our disposal a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and a FTIR microscope. These techniques allow us to obtain absorption spectra of materials (liquid, solid, powder). This technique is extremely useful in our lab as we use it for identification of compounds. We can work in transmission or attenuated Total Reflection (ATR). ATR allows to work at the very surface of the sample, to tackle questions regarding film composition/layers or other complex structured samples. We have several accessories we use to modulate the depth of penetration of the IR beam in the sample surface (diamond crystal, ZnSe crystal, Ge crystal, reflection).
